Episode 4
the return of Kekuta from hunting
Kekuta knew he had a long journey to embark on; he hurriedly gripped his arrow unyieldingly and started his journey home. By this time, his big catches were already comfortably bagged. He courageously walked through the great forest of Tendala. He passed through populated and scanty bushes with hurry because time was not on side.
As Kekuta was about to reach the fearful ‘Bantangbato’- a place in the forest inhabited by dangerous animals; he started singing in Chorus like any of his previous hinting trips.
Beautifully he sang in his mother tongue saying, “Ning na nojuloo beh mingna, mbuka nkango ji, mbuka nnyabondi, adung Mbuka tulu kassi. Woto Jumalay hanyi taa? Ayefingti Ngaabeng nying silokang.
Ningna najoloo beng mingna, nsengkangwoo senkandi, daawoo daaaa, naa kuyaa taminyeh yeh, yeh finti, kekuta woteh silalehlaa”. Meaning-“if there are those that I can defeat, I don’t lower my voice, I don’t restrain my eyes from looking, I don’t desist from listening. Then who is bold? Come out on this road.
If there are those that I can defeat I will raise my voice everywhere. If anyone abhors it, come out here because kekuta do not fear you”. Kekuta spent minutes singing this chorus but none of the dangerous animals appeared. He decided to continue his journey back home.
Kekuta was about to reach the main entrance of the forest when he saw an unrecognized image of a person. As he fast approached, he realized the identity of the person. It was Badou, a friend and a fellow hunter. Earlier on, Badou wanted to deceive Kekuta by scaring him about the presence of fearless animals at the direction Kekuta wanted to go to. His plan never worked because Kekuta considered it as childish. At about some meters apart, kekuta amazingly looked at his desperate friend who was without a catch.
Even though he knew vividly that Badou’s earlier plan was to deceive him, Kekuta greeted and motivated him. They had a brief conversation.
Kekuta: “My dear friend, don’t be desperate! Hunting is like a game; sometimes you win or lose. But if you lose, try to recount on the things that made you a loser. Reserve your energy and spirit for the next trip and you will be assured of a catch.”
Badou:”hunting is like a game you said? If it is as you say, how comes you never lose then?
Kekuta: "has you forgotten about my family lineage already? I am a son of a successful hunter who never missed until his demise. My father did exactly as my grandfather. It should not be a surprise to you if I equally following the same trend.”
Badou:” Whatever you say Kekuta! Please go and celebrate your victory. I don’t care if the village treats you like a king.”
Kekuta:” Badou my friend, my catch is never my catch. Please join us at home to have your share.”
The conversation ended and both of them dispersed.
Kekuta completely left the forest and about to enter the village. By this time, many of the villagers were gazing at the village main yard road. They were anxious to see a face that resembled kekuta’s. The village elders were comfortably seated at the great hunter’s compound waiting on his arrival.
